Vlka Fenryka – Fenrys in true color and the Invitational

“Beat your thoughts to the mould of your will.”

Leman Russ

It has been the busiest two months of my life. A huge professional release, buying a gorgeous house, moving the whole family and then pneumonia & antibiotics. All this time I struggled with the Invitational entry half finished, until finally the cold  told me it was futile to try and stay away from Fenrys. Such is the muse, singular is the focus. But not participating in the Invitational would be criminal, so enter the Grey Hunter.

From the glory of the Ministorum, glimmering golden aura of the god emperor, the direction swings to the storm cloud greys of Fenrys. Called Grey Hunter, this is a humble, but detailed study of the essence of my project. Study of human, astartes and Fenrys physics. Paint work in progress.

I also have something special today – the Vlka Fenryka captured in pure natural light for the first time. More color correct than any other previous photos, but still following our iPhone & White for exposure lock trickery.

It’s now six months into the project, and even if the Kaerl squad and the Wolves are still painting in process, this is definitely a Sky Warrior host now – a full fledged army that the Vehicles already primed will bring to 2000pts.

They are,

Rhuncir Gorevlkae, called Lord Balewolf, Jarl, and Thunderwolf Rago,

Hjarkor Rödmoon, called Lord Hjar, Jarl

Heordoth Martian, Iron father (rotator cannon)

Ristan Uhl Wyrdhammar, Wolf Guard (thuder hammer)

Galeg, called Rödhair, Wolf Guard (axe and combimelta)

Arni Uhl Greyewintr, Wolf Guard (sword and combimelta)

Vosla Helclaw, called Slayer, called Threadtaker, Called Hjolda, 1st Scout (wolf claws)

Rerthung Uhl , called Beast. Void Claw  (bald, wolf claws)

Ullste Jungchrot, Void Claw (helmet, wolf claws)

Ola Rost, Void Claw (forge world torso, wolf claws)

Niilor, The Haunted, Void Claw (abaddon conversion, wolf claws)

Thorwald Wintrmaw,  Grey Hunter (running hammer grey hunter)

Thrar Wargjeger, Wolf guard Scout (scout)

Huskaerl & Kaerls, Bone Crafters & Flesh Weavers.

  1. Your painting and conversion skills are exceptional. I find them inspiring. It’s a pleasure to browse through these pictures as well as the rest of the blog.

    1. Yes, I’m quite happy to have been able to share these daylight photos as the most accurate representation so far. I have to say, there is never anything like seeing stuff in real life, but at least these are getting closer and I definitely intend to keep taking day light shots in the mix.

  2. These are a triumph; especially in such a short amount of time. My favourites remain the Iron Priest and the be-antlered wyrd.

    (Nice shelves, btw!)

    1. The two most original / furthest of the existing imagery perhaps. I like them for those reasons too and am quite focused and excited to get this “army” portion done so I can study more esoteric Fenrysians.

  3. It might be strange that of all the fantastic miniatures on display here, that I fixate on the kaerl with the meltagun. Wonderfully atmospheric paintjob on him. Am I right in thinking that you’re basically going directly to weathering powders after laying down the basic colours?

Anyway, just wanted to say that for my money it’s by far the most interesting project in the 40k hobby going on right now.

    1. Thanks Nicklas! With the Kaerls, I actually use Oil paints directly after sketching in some dark grey, browns and skin tones with an airbrush. Aim is for them to look like they wear thick, weather worn and dusted black garments and leather equipment. After sealing the oils, I do the metallics so they have nice gloss and oomph, and also add some shading on the leather if necessary.

  4. It’s this level of craftsmanship of both company and consumer that keeps me so emotionally invested in the franchise. You truly are an amazing artist, one of few that takes these models and makes them more then glorified placeholders.

    1. Thank you Joe! Much appreciated. It’s been an incredible joy in life growing up with the hobby and now starting to have the next generation get hooked.

  5. I have to say I am in awe of your skills. I have only just come across your project but have really enjoyed going back through all the stages. The conversions look like they were always intended to be that way.
