The Bio-Pilgrymme, Part III: Enter Arch Magos Biologis Sverre Arrheniuss

So yes, after exhausting everyone’s collection of superlatives, Stefan ups the ante. Enter the emerald brilliance of Sverre Arrheniusse, a gorgeous concentration of the Green Mechanicvm vision and a miniature that will take it’s rightful place in the Blanchean hall of fame.

A month to go, and Kari’s Milker will meet Sverre on Terra, and so many ridiculously good miniatures will be on display that getting to rolling some dice will require real effort!

The Bio-Pilgrymme, Part III: Enter Arch Magos Biologis Sverre Arrheniusse

Of Mans First Disobedience, and the Fruit

Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste

Brought Death to the World, and all our woe,

With loss of Eden, till one greater Man

Restore us, and regain the blissful Seat

(Ancient Terran poet, Paradise Lost, Book I, 667.M2)

III.I

THE PRIGORIAN DIVIDE, IMPERIAL FRONTIER, 995.M41

The frontiers of Imperial colonisation – on the brink of the great unknown – are places of rumour mongering.

Some of the staunch rumours among Rogue Traders in the Prigorian Divide, known simply as The Rift, say that an arcane technology was recently discovered beyond The Rift in an ancient region of space apparently uncharted in Imperial records. Some fever-ridden rumourmongers on the Trade Harbours and safe havens in The Rift even whisper about Halo Stars, dark thorn moons, living machine trees and howling dryatides.

‘The Green Man Cometh…’ they feverishly rant, ‘the Green Man Cometh…’

III.II

Now, on the brink of a new millennium, a Green Mechanicvm host from Crataegus Fragmentum is on the rise in The Rift!

Magos Biologis Sverre Arrheniusse has returned from the thorn moons of Crataegus Fragmentum into the fading light of the Emperor. With him is a Genetor host of genetically and mechanically modified Green Mechanicvm, which has been secluded from the charted regions of space for millennia. They are on board Brostten Haggwers Rogue Trader Anaxaegoras after Haggwers and his team first made contact three decades ago. Apparently Haggwers brought with him a priceless cargo treasured by the Green Mechanicvm: fragments of The Daerwynne Palimpseste discovered by Haggwers in 944.M41 deep inside a thorny vault on board a drifting Space Hulk in The Rift.

Arrheniusse and Haggwers are now bound on a bio-pilgrymage for Holy Terra with an intention to find the missing fragments of the palimpsest rumoured to be hidden in a derelict Botanicarium underneath one of the ancient pilgrymage routes deep in the golden cathedrals of Terra. Arrheniusse is of the firm belief that the fragments of layered scriptures will help ensure the ultimate manifestation of Genetor knowledge right in the heart of the Imperium itself: The transformation of the broken Golden Throne into the green seat of the Emperor Reborn…

From Throne to Thorne!

Green Man Cometh…

+++

After several winter nights of building biomechanical limbs, thorns and lichen I have finally finished painting Arch Magos Biologis Sverre Arrheniusse. He has been prepared in the same way as my Thorn Guards to make him resemble the raw nature of the thorn moons of Crataegus. Barked and weathered…

I have done some minor changes to Arrheniusse since my initial post and, inspired by all the goodness on Sleet, added more details to qualify my narrative. Apart from various Crataegus artefacts like thorns, scrolls, gene-extracts and other Synod relics, Arrheniusse is wielding Amygdalinne, a poisonous finger ring in the shape of a thorn, Hethel, a Haw Staff made from the black core of Haw trees, the favoured wood of witches, and Akantha, an archaic pistol firing thorn shaped bullets of iron hard Crataegus wood.

I have added his three personal Thorn Guards for scale as well as some detail shots…

  1. A stunning conversion, made even more astounding with the evocative painting. I love the mossy, dull green tones throughout everything, even permeating into the blacks. The moss and texture you achieved throughout the model really puts it over the top, and makes it a joy to look at. I cannot wait to see how it fairs in game!

    1. Thanks a lot Eric. I look so much forward to see him in action too – a bit rusty on that part, so good he has his guards with him to Terra.

  2. Beautiful creation, a real sense of movement and the biomechanical theme woven in with the Green Man mythology is fascinating. If you have not already read it I would reccomend “Flesh and Blood by Graham Masterton for an interesting read and twist on the Green Man (in this case the Green Traveller)

    1. Much too kind Jeff! Considering the incredible stuff that is Pilgrym. For me it has been such a collective endevour that I really see these also as a manifestation of a lot of great talks and inspiration from other models and drawings. His Haw Staff is a direct reference to Thistles priesthood on the Celestial Stair. And his home world of Crataegus has grown out of your very own Thorn Moons described so well in relation to your Skadiir…

  3. Absolutely stunning… from concept to creation, this is an incredible piece of art, and I love it. The movement, the colour, the texture are all sheer perfection. Thank you 🙂

    1. I am glad you say that Neil!

I had not considered that myself, but in fact he could very well be a continuation of my Anatomy of Melancholy project…thanks for reminding me. Very much.

  4. Beautiful! Love the range of greens. The jade-like areas have such a wonderful luster against the warm mossy colors. The posing of tendrils and cables really is perfect.

I hope the green magos and the milk-maid meet in personal combat! They have kind of similar poses and energies and such completely different color-schemes (and are also some of my favorites); would be so fun seeing them squaring off.

    1. Thank very much Weirding!

If the good game masters does not see to it that they get to meet in combat I will do my best to take the Milk Lady for a ‘nice’ stroll in the Botanicarium…

  5. Seriously – the quality of work in Pilgrym is so amazing, and then the Bio-Pilgrymmes appears and raises the bar yet again…

    Astounding work.

    1. Thank you Lamby. I really see this as a collective work in that the Green Mechanicvm grew out of a tonnes of inspiration during the initial planning and developing the narrative. Tammy coined the idea for the Emperor as the Green Man, Thistles astounding work obviously was a huge ressource, Vaders Thorn Moon Skadiir, JRN’s ideas for an Organ Tree…goes to show that this hobby only gets better and more fun through the sharing of ideas!

  6. Beautiful paintjob! The blue metal is really what makes the models for me. Such a great way to make the details stand out. I would never have thought of such a stark detail coloration, very inspirationall
