A Few More Members of the Red Church Enter the Fray

Adam of Between the Bolter and Me has been busy painting some kick-ass good looking models for his Church of the Red Athenæum. One of my favourite model of Adam’s, Kirill Blokhin, is now also ready. Take a look!

With less than a month before the fate of the Pilgrym is decided, I have tirelessly been working on painting all of the remaining members of the Church of the Red Athenæum. I am pleased to report that I have three newly painted members to show you all.

Kirill Blokhin, Acirgeon of the Church of the Red Athenæum

Kirill_01Kirill_02

Before the adoption of more medically rigorous techniques, the Church of the Red Athenæum had one person, the Acirgeon, who ritually removed limbs from all of the members of the congregation. Kirill Blokhin is the Church’s current Acirgeon, but his role is largely just for appearances, as his rudimentary means of amputation have given way to medically sound practices championed by Cardinal Aseneth Levedescu. The coming of the Pilgrym and the hallowed Red Hour have filled Kirill with a new inspiration. He will be the one to sacrifice the Pilgrym, freeing the Emperor from the shackles of the Golden Throne and allowing Him to exercise His Divine Will.

Ehret Filipovic, Chief Bibliognost of the Church of the Red Athenæum

Librarian 1Librarian 2

Since its foundation, the Church has placed great emphasis on recorded history; particularly pertaining to the ideals that the Great Crusade was built upon, ones that faltered during the dark days of the Horus Heresy. One of the Church’s primary concerns is deciphering the Emperor’s Will and Vision which drove the Crusade. This Imperial Truth died with the Emperor’s mortal frame, and was replaced with superstition and the vain political maneuvering of the High Lords of Terra. A Librarian Guild exists within the Church which occupies itself with uncovering as much knowledge of this time and the principles that ruled it, such that the Church might more accurately espouse His principles. They prize the works and recordings of Remembrancers from the early days of the Crusade, which champion the Emperor’s thinking and ideals. They also search for accounts of the final duel that ended the Heresy, the fight that brought their savior to His knees and ushered in an Age of Suffering. With this knowledge, they can more accurately live out His suffering. Ehret Filipovic, Chief Bibliognost, is the longest serving member of the Librarian Guild. More than nearly any other person on Terra, save select members of the Ordo Scriptorium, he knows of the Emperor’s final hours walking amongst the Imperium. He knows of the bloodletting and the butchery, the fall of the angel Primarch, and the fall of the Hope for humanity. These details will not be forgotten; they are details that will drive every facet of the Church’s existence, for suffering is paramount if they are to follow in His footsteps.

Vasili Abramovitch, Congregation member of the Church of the Red Athenæum

Mutant 1Mutant 3

Vasili is one of the many mutants that worship the Emperor as a member of the Church of the Red Athenæum. The Church hhas always welcomed all within its ranks, provided that they worship the Emperor, hallowed be His name, and see the current Imperium to be the corrupt, corpulent bureaucracy that it is. They recognized that the mutant population struggling beneath the Steps, were some of the most dedicated souls on all of Terra, venerating the Emperor despite the persecution they were subjected to, in His name, by witch hunters and venators.

It is hard to believe, but there are only two more models left to paint before the event! I think I am going to paint the Cardinal first, leaving Roland for the final model (the first to build and last to finish!). The Red Hour is approaching…

    1. Thank you for the kind words! The cloaked legs on the two sisters of the Order of the Crimson Hour were taken from the Flagellants (with their feet replaced with boots). The blind congregation member in the back got his legs from one of the Empire wizards from the Empire Hurricanum kit (with feet taken from the Dark Eldar Hellions). Finally, the mutant’s legs are from the Mechanicus Electro-Priests. Hopefully that helps!

    1. I took special effort to make sure the color scheme for the Church was dark and sinister. I included a lot of drab earthy colors to ground each member in reality, despite the fanatical flare present in each. 🙂

    1. It certainly is a sinister collection of models. I have been really pleased how the group has come together, and seems to fit together as a whole. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  1. Great stuff indeed Adam!

Kirill and Ehret are probably my current favourites – they both have so much character.

I am particularly impressed with the seemless conversion work, which makes them look so much straight out of a box. Knowing how much work and attention to detail that went into them that is quite impressive.

    1. Thanks! I really have tried to make the conversions seem natural and not like conversions at all, and am glad it has shown through! I really do like Kirill and Ehret. Both come from aspects of the hobby that stuck with me since beginning so many years ago, an old Blanche piece and an old Nelson sculpt respectively.

  2. Fantastic work as always!
The one-armed man is my favourite. A fantastic model backed up with a great paintjob on the pale skin!
    Wonderfull!

    1. Thanks, I really like his pale skin too! The skin tones have been something I really put a lot of effort into with this project. Terra is a big place, and I want to, at least in part, suggest the diversity among its population.

  3. Superb group! Such an attention to detail with the converting, and the pale skin is just great, I have to keep these in mind when painting skin next time… And Kirill sure is one of the coolest individuals in Pilgrym.

    1. Thanks! I have really had a lot of fun experimenting with different skin tones with this project. I am glad you like Kirill too; I really like how he turned out, and I am happy I was able to do the illustration partial justice in the model.

    1. Thank you! I cannot believe it is almost done (at least for the event in July)! It has been a really long journey, but one I am really proud of and am happy I was pushed to do it!
